‘Odd’, ‘unbefitting’, ‘incompatible’, ‘inappropriate’; the term ‘out of place’ often has a negative connotation. However, if we consider this expression literally, it simply refers to the separation of an entity from the environment in which it typically exists.
In this exhibition, 17 artists of various backgrounds and ideologies have come together with one common purpose; to explore the meaning of the statement ‘out of place’. The outcome is a diverse and introspective examination of issues related to identity, culture, society and spatial ambiguity, with a shared awareness; that taking something out of context can often help us see ‘it’ from another perspective.
